Driving instructor training by Newmarket Driving School
Being your own boss allows you to work the days and hours that you wish. This, as well as an attractive salary is what draws many into becoming a driving instructor. Meeting a wide range of people, training them and feel a great sense of achievement as they pass the driving test is something all driving instructors enjoy.
If I want to become a driving instructor, where do I start?
To start training as a driving instructor, you will need to have held a full UK driving licence for at least three and a half years and no more than 5 penalty points should be on your licence at that time. You will then need to undergo a criminal record check. Once you are satisfied these are in place, you can apply for the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) starter pack. To apply, call the DSA on 0870 121 4202 with your credit or debit card at hand as the pack costs £5.00. Form ADI 3 from the ADI Starter Pack will allow you to apply to be entered onto the DVSA register of driving instructors. If accepted, training to become a driving instructor can begin.
What does the training involve?
In order to qualify as an ADI, 3 exams must be taken; Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3. The Part 1 exam is very similar to the theory and hazard perception test learner drivers sit. The Part 2 exam closely resembles the practical driving test that a learner driver takes and the Part 3 exam tests your ability to teach a learner driver.
Newmarket Driving School provide highly experienced instructor trainers who teach on a one-to-one basis. Our training methods are clear and concise and designed to be taken at an individuals pace. The same instructor trainer will be provided throughout the duration of your chosen course and courses can be taken either intensively or on a part time basis to fit around your current schedule.
We offer a pay-as-you-go system to spread the costs or for complete course payments, discounts apply.
Once you have completed the Part 1 and Part 2 exam, plus completed a minimum of 40 hours of Part 3 training, you may apply for a trainee driving instructor licence (PDI). This allows you to work full or part time, teaching learners for pay. It also provides valuable experience for taking the Part 3 exam.
As either a trainee instructor or a fully qualified ADI, you will be offered a position within our driving school. Full support along with a diary of pupils to teach will be provided.
